9:50 pm - You Can Now Store Your Fic on RoS YahooGroups!

herne24
This will be of interest to RoS fic writers more than anyone, but Karon has agreed to let people store their stories in the Files section on RoS YahooGroups. For that purpose, a folder called "RoS Fanfic" has been created. For those of you who are members of RoS YahooGroups, you can upload your stories as Word documents or save them as text files. The Files link can be found in the upper left-hand corner of the RoS YahooGroups home page.

I would be happy to upload fic files for any writers who would like to have their stories archived on RoS YahooGroups. I can also send Word docs to anyone who would prefer to upload their fic themselves. Feel free to contact me if you're interested in either option.

herne24 has informed people elsewhere that she's had to shut down the Robin of Sherwood Fanfic Archive that she has nurtured for many years. Many thanks to her for her labour of love, and for her patient and encouraging attitude to her writers. *sad*

10:35 pm - New RoS Fic Community

herne24

I'm happy to say that [info]karri_kln1671 has been kind enough to rebuild her RoS fic community, The Huntingdon Tapestry, which will welcome most RoS genfic stories. Actually, [info]karri_kln1671 is still working on the submission guidelines and might hold a discussion in the current mod post. In any case, if you're interested in joining or would just like to learn more, you can find the community here:

9:40 pm - Sad News About the RoS Fanfic Archive

herne24

There's no easy way to say this, so I'll just come to the point. I'm afraid that the Robin of Sherwood Fanfic Archive has closed. T35.com has shut down all free accounts and is only accepting paid memberships. I'd like to say that it isn't about the money and, in fact, that's only part of the issue. The reality of the situation is that most RoS writers (and, let's face it, there aren't a lot to begin with) aren't interested in posting their stories at the Archive anymore. It's faster and easier to post fic on LiveJournal or places like Archive of Our Own. With so few submissions, it really isn't worth it to purchase a paid account. Also, if I'm going to be completely honest, I just don't have the same amount of interest I once had, not to mention the time and the energy.

If any of you have any questions then please feel free to contact me at herne24@hotmail.com

4:49 am - Rewatch: Herne's Son

karen9

I think Herne’s Son is an excellent starting episode for series three. The transition from series two to series three is handled well. The introduction of a successor to Loxley is credible. I know Adam Bell and The Betrayal were filmed first, so by the time they filmed Herne’s Son the cast knew and liked Jason and it shows.

Showing the tragic ending of series two and smoothly melding it with the beginning of series three makes for an exciting start.

We are reacquainted with our old enemies, the Sheriff of Nottingham, a sulky Guy of Gisburne and a surly Abbot Hugo. We find out what has happened to Marion since Loxley’s death. He’d said to her: “You must care. Then I can’t die, can I?” But she wasn’t able to keep the outlaws together. She went back to her father and was pardoned by the King, but the other outlaws had to fend for themselves. They’re understandably resentful of her and her father because of this. It’s noble of Nasir to risk his life to rescue Sir Richard. I suppose it must have been because he is Marion’s father and Nasir’s still fond of her.

Owen of Clun is a nasty piece of work who enjoys watching men fight to the death. He’s a butch brute of a man who gives me the creeps. I like Robert’s fight with him. Robert teases the bigger, clumsier man and beats him.  Jason is physically convincing in this fight and in all the fights to come. Despite the near-fatal ducking by Tuck, Robert takes on Little John, Will Scarlett and Nasir and equals all three.  I enjoy the three fights.

Robert of Huntingdon is a confident and mischievous young man. He’s still treated as a boy by his father but shows that he can take on responsibility in this episode. He has authority when he needs it, such as in Edward’s village and confronting Will’s brother, Amos.  He makes a serious decision to become “Herne’s Son” and commits himself to champion the villagers and to bring the outlaws together.  Though by the end of this episode he is still able to return to his old life if he wanted to.

Would Robert have returned to Sherwood if he hadn’t met Marion? I don’t know. From his conversation with John Robert shows that he is aware of injustice and would like to do something about it but hasn’t the nerve or enough motivation to throw away his future. So maybe Marion was the catalyst for him joining the outlaws rather than the only reason?

It’s good to see how Robert wins over the outlaws one by one. As Clive pointed out in one of the interviews this mirrored how Jason won the cast over one by one. During their escapade in Clun Castle I think you can see some affection towards Robert from the other outlaws. They accept him taking command and planning the escapade in Clun Castle. He gets help once inside from the quick-witted outlaws when he’s fighting Nasir and when he takes Owen hostage. Robert shows his leadership qualities in getting them all out. He stays till last.

I think when Gulnar says “Now, my lord!” to Owen just before the portcullis comes down, that it’s intentional on Gulnar’s part. He seems to have taken a bit of a fancy to Marion himself and may have resented Owen.

Marion’s attitude to Robert is interesting. She’s quite cold to him. I think she finds him a bit presumptuous and wants to make it clear to him that although she’s grateful he can’t expect any favours.

Overall I thought this episode was an excellent start to series three. It’s full of action and drama with some humour.  The characters are all convincing and the introduction of a nobleman as Herne’s Son is made credible by the story and the actors.

10:54 am - Rewatch: The Sheriff of Nottingham

karen9

I’m enjoying these re-watches even though I know the episodes so well. The familiar music, Jason …

I think The Sheriff of Nottingham is one of many people’s favourites: the delightfully camp Philip Mark and the not so bad at camping himself Sheriff, Gisburne turning coat and sucking up to Mark, but getting his comeuppance, Nasir and Sarak’s swordfights.

I like the insight we’re given into Nasir’s past. I like the way Robin gets the back story from Nasir and tells him: “You’re one of us. We will be with you.” I like the way Nasir responds to Robin. Nasir has quite a lot to say in this episode from the beginning when he joins the others in making fun of Much.

The episode also shows a dilemma for the villagers. The outlaws will help the villagers but the villagers are helpless against reprisals from authority. Some of the villagers will think that they are better off without the outlaws’ help. The Sheriff hasn’t taken revenge against the villagers too far because, as he told Gisburne in an earlier episode, the serfs are his serfs and they work his land. But Philip Mark will kill as many people as it takes for Robin to surrender or be handed in.

Whenever I watch the episode I say to John: “Wait! Let Much put the stone back in place.” But of course they have to be caught. I like the dawning of understanding on Gisburne’s face when he figures out what the stone and passage means.

I think the scene with the captured Sheriff is good, when Much asks the Sheriff why the Sheriff hates them. The Sheriff has some good points to make. The difference between what the outlaws do in reality and what they stand for. Let’s face it: they do use violence, steal and kill, for however good a reason. “Dispossessed, doomed.” That’s true and makes me sad. I like the black humour Robin brings to the situation and Jason’s lovely smirky smile.

One has to feel a bit sorry for the Sheriff when he gamely tries to claim credit for helping capture the outlaws but ends up in the dungeon. I hope he had the straw changed for the old man afterwards but I doubt it!

I wonder if Robin had any chance of hitting “Sarak” with the crossbow? One knows though that Nasir must have survived the fight against Sarak, but not be sure who it is that turns up in Sarak’s clothes. Then there’s a good old dustup with the townspeople enjoying seeing Gisburne take a bashing from Robin and ending up in the horse trough. Edward and Marion do a good job of capturing D’Giscar (? spelling)

One thing that doesn’t ring true for me is when Gisburne and the Sheriff are talking after the latest abortive attempt to catch the outlaws. Gisburne talks about the Sheriff’s obsession with Robin Hood. Certainly in the third series I think Gisburne comes over as more obsessed than the Sheriff. What do you think?

I love the second to last scene between Robin and Marion. So sweet when they touch noses. And Jason’s dimples!

I enjoy the ending with the Sheriff lounging in his chair with a triumphant toothy smile on his face. All is well! We have the incompetent Sheriff and the bungling Gisburne back.

5:06 am - Rewatch: The Pretender

karen9

The Pretender is one of my favourites from series three. I think it has a strong plot, using actual historical characters, i.e. Hadwisa, Isabella, Prince Arthur of Brittany and King John. The time scale is inaccurate, but I think it doesn't matter much. The introduction with Hadwisa and Torneur draws one in immediately and introduces the subject matter and characters well.

Then we are plunged into action with "Arthur's" flight through Sherwood. Robin is shown as the leader at once by telling Much to help "Arthur" and then telling the others to let the soldiers go. I like the talk between Robin and Will and then the banter between Will and John. I think the cameraderie between Robin and his two lieutenants, Will and John, is well represented in this episode. When Robin returns from seeing Herne Will and John flank him when he goes to talk to "Arthur."

The scenes with the Sheriff and his dog bite are entertaining. Gisburne barely conceals his amusement. I like the steward with his funny looks, especially when he pats the Sheriff after the Sheriff passes out. I like the realistic clothes, propos and interiors, e.g. the bedroom full of smoke from the fire and the torches.

Gisbune is rather stupid to be drawn into the conspiracy by the Gloucesters. He's ambitious and sees a chance for revenge on Robin, but he isn't bright.

It's clear that most of the outlaws - certainly Robin, Will, John, Nasir and Tuck - are suspicious of "Arthur" from the start. I'm not sure about Marion or Much. Much always looks so innocent and guileless. It's not clear to me whether or not Marion is involved in the trap for  "Arthur." If she wasn't surely she would have protested more when Robin left? But she says at the abbey: "What if Robin is right about "Arthur?"

Queen Isabella is a nasty piece of work but oddly likeable to me. I think the actress does a good job. I enjoy her scene at the end with Torneur and poor blundering Gisburne. She has a lot of authority for one so young. I don't know if she meant to but in the last scene with Robin she looks at him as if she fancies him!

There's some good action in the abbey, particularly Robin and "Arthur's" sword fight. The fights are always well done and convincing in RoS.

I think Jason did particularly well in this episode. He conveys quiet authority and leadership based on mutual respect. I enjoy his scene with "Arthur" when "Arthur" brags about his fighting ability. The way Robin speaks to "Arthur" with quiet, slightly smiling menace.

These are just some thoughts. I know it's not an intellectual critique. I will end on an intellectual note though: Jason looks really good in this episode! He has a still but strong physical presence and looks particularly handsome.

6:08 am - Rewatch?

karen9
I know most of us are involved in fandoms for current shows, but maybe we could revive this lj a bit? I think we have a couple of newish members.

How about an episode rewatch? Anyone may choose a favourite episode to write on and others can add and comment. Who wants to give it a go?

10:07 pm - RoS Fanfic Archive Update

herne24
I'm finally getting around to working on the next update at The Robin of Sherwood Fanfic Archive. I have two more stories to post in an ongoing series, but there's always room for more fic if anyone would be interested in contributing to the site. I'm more than happy to link to fic on LJ, A03 or wherever, though stories can also be added directly to the archive itself, of course. I can be reached at herne24@hotmail.com.

11:33 am - yuletide fic exchange and question about tags

gruskek
So first of all, hi to everyone! I've been a fan of RoS ever since I was a kid (I didn't watch the original run, I wasn't born then yet, but a mid nineties re-run). The show was majorly popular in Poland (I'm Polish) in the eighties and the nineties and is still fondly remembered. I recently bought the DVDs (the entire series was released here a few years ago) and I'm currently in the middle of the second series. I was very anxious before I started this re-watch, because I didn't want to ruin my memories (I hadn't watched the show in 12 years, I think) but it lived up to my memory of it. In some ways I'm enjoying it even more than I used to, because I can appreciate the acting (as a kid I watched it mainly for the story and fighting) and also how cute the entire cast is ;) I'm very happy to have found this friendly place full of talented and avid fans <3 OK, ranty, rant, that's all about me, now some important matters:

I have tiny problem with the tags. They're a bit messy. There are different variations of "fic" and "fanfic" for example... Could this be fixed please? I know I'm new (I really don't want to sound pushy) but this is a bit confusing and when one wants to find something specific it gets troublesome. Also some tags for discussions or something like that could be useful. Some posts are hard to classify.

Now the real deal:
Signups for the Yuletide fic exchange have started!

What's Yuletide? It's a yearly exchange of fics for obscure (as in not having enough fic-writing activity as they deserve, either because they are very new, very old or just not too well known) fandoms. This includes all sorts of media: films, tv, books, computer games, songs, music videos, RPF... anything.

What do you have to do? You have to sign up offering for what fandoms you can write and requesting fandoms from which you want to recieve fic. It's obligatory for you to write at least one 1000 words long fic (it can be longer but can't be shorter) for your recipient. In exchange someone will write at least one fic for you, choosing from the 3 or 4 fandoms you request. That's the gist of it. For details read the FAQ: http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/faq.shtml

So why am I writing about it here?

Because Robin of Sherwood and various other versions of Robin Hood are amongst the eligible fandoms this year!

Here's the list of Robin Hood media you can write and request fic for:

Books:
Outlaws of Sherwood - Robin McKinley
Robin Hood (traditional)

Films:
Robin Hood (1973) (the animated Disney film)
Robin Hood (2010)
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)

TV series:
Robin of Sherwood

I might have missed something, so have a look at the full list of fandoms here http://archiveofourown.org/tag_sets/2467?tag_type=fandom (also other fandoms may interest you).

Here's the sign-up form:
http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2010/signups/new

The FAQ:
http://www.yuletidetreasure.org/faq.shtml

The lj comm for the exchange:
http://community.livejournal.com/yuletide_admin/

Sign-ups close on Friday the 19th, so you have to do this this week!

8:13 pm - Blu-ray coming!

imwalde
I've just seen a news item on tvshowsondvd.com about a new Blu-ray HD DVD set coming for series 1 of Robin of Sherwood. Release planned (for now) for 3 May.

Yay for Blu-ray, but I am a little worried about how well some stuff will hold up in high def. Like the close ups on Cromm Cruac in the lake (Not series 1, I know, but still!). That was hilarious enough on VHS on old cathode ray tvs! The stunts and fighting should look awesome though, and just think of the pretty, pretty screencaps to come.

current mood: cheerful
